Welcome to Year 4!
The three classes are known as Eagles, Owls and Hawks, all based around a ‘Birds of Prey’ theme. We hope to inspire and engage our pupils during the year, teach them good study habits and foster a kind approach to those around them.
In Y4, pupils will continue to have homework each week. This homework will be set on Friday. If it is to be handed in for marking, the homework book should be handed in on the following Wednesday. The homework is briefly described on the ‘Learning Log’ sheet which is completed in class on Friday and stuck into their book. Some homework is ongoing weekly practice.
Each week the children are encouraged to read for a short time 4 times a week. We ask parents or carers to sign the reading record book to say that this has been achieved. Children hand in their reading record on Friday morning and receive stickers for their book mark.
The children have login details so that they can access a wide variety of books on this online resource. They can read these books as part of their Fab 4 reading achievements. The questions that are asked about the texts provide very useful comprehension practice.
Children need to build in weekly practice of tables up to 12 x 12. The aim is that all children will know multiplication and division facts for all tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of the year. Tables games and activities take place regularly in lessons and we would appreciate it if these could be consolidated with some tables practice at home.
Spellings are set for tests every 2 weeks on a Friday. The children are given time at school to practice and should reinforce their learning at home.
The children will be able to access this online homework site for maths. It is self-marked for immediate feedback and teachers can see that the work set has been completed. MyMaths is not set every week but is often set to reinforce the current maths lessons. Separate information will be provided.
Indoor P.E is on a Tuesday morning and Outdoor P.E. is on a Wednesday afternoon.
Each class will also have a term’s worth of swimming lessons at King Edward’s Baths on a Wednesday afternoon and we also have block of works taught by our P.E. specialist, Richard Mills which usually end with a ‘festival’ at High Storrs School in the final session.
Please ensure your child has the correct kit for each session. If for any reason your child needs to be excused from the session, we just ask that you write a note to hand in on the day. We try to do outdoor P.E. in most weathers so please ensure that your child has warm clothes, hats and gloves for colder days!
