Welcome to Y6
We’d like to offer you a warm welcome to Year 6. Our class names are based around the theme of historical buildings: Hardwick, Haddon and Harewood.
During the year, the children will be expected to be role models for the younger pupils and will have opportunities to apply for positions of responsibility if they wish, such as school ambassadors, sports leaders and digital leaders to name a few.
We aim to equip the children with the skills, confidence and positive attitudes in order to make a smooth transition to secondary school. We encourage the children to develop their independence, challenge themselves and be in charge of their own learning with the support of teachers.
Part of our school moto is ‘Happy Children, Happy School’. We aim to ensure our children are happy in order for them to learn and to reach their full potential.
End of KS2 assessments
A meeting will be held in September to explain the administration of these statutory tests. This meeting will involve tips and techniques on how to manage the process.
Your child may be asked to attend intervention sessions when necessary in order to support and extend learning. These are held for a variety of children of all levels of ability and are aimed at encouraging and supporting your child in a positive learning environment. We would welcome your support with this.
The PowerPoint from the meeting will be published on the website.
Children receive their homework every Friday and we ask for it to be returned the following Wednesday. It may contain MyMaths, Bug Club or be an activity to be handed in physically.
Frequently, it will involve concepts previously learnt in class.
On occasions, spelling lists will be given out to learn based around a spelling rule. The children will have been introduced to these words in class before they are sent home (unless the task is to discover the rule). We ask that the children put some time into practising these spellings throughout the week. They will also be required to practise the government’s statutory Year 5/6 spelling list at home regularly.
Reading is an ongoing expectation and, even though they are now Year 6, we still encourage regular reading with a parent. ‘Reciprocal Reading’ is a strategy we use in class and we would like to see this being used at home. It follows four stages: Predict, Clarify, Question and Summarise (more information will be sent home).
Please encourage your child to practise their times tables up to 12×12 as often as possible as the maths curriculum is heavily dependent on these to solve more complex calculations, including fractions.
Indoor P.E is on a Monday morning for most of the year and Outdoor PE is on a Thursday afternoon. On occasions, this can change so your child must ensure they have the correct kit in school all week just in case. If for any reason your child needs to be excused from the session, we just ask that you write a note to hand in on the day.
Our residential is to Hawkshead in the Lake District. This is a 4 day/3 night experience. The children have plenty of time to socialise within the grounds of Hawkshead Youth Hostel. It is a fantastic opportunity for the children to mix with those from other classes whilst partaking in challenging yet enjoyable activities, such as canoeing, raft-building, orienteering and a hike up Latterbarrow. An information evening regarding this will be held in the autumn term (please see the website for details).
Other trips and experiences will be organised throughout the year.
End of Year Production
Towards the end of Year 6, all children take part in a production in an actual theatre. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to showcase their acting, singing and dancing skills. It’s an amazing celebration to mark the end of the year and creates unforgettable memories.
The 2019 performances are based at the Merlin Theatre on Thursday 27th June and Friday 28th June. More details will be sent to you during the summer term.
Most importantly, we very much look forward to getting to know and working with you and your child. If you have any worries, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher to make an appointment after school.
